Open Sauce is a Chrome extension that injects unnecessary engineering into any website — scanners, inventions, blueprint annotations, chaos effects, and easter eggs. Inspired by William Osman, the Hacksmith, Michael Reeves, and the Backyard Scientist, the extension turns every webpage into a ridiculous engineering experiment in the spirit of the Open Sauce Expo.

This privacy policy explains exactly what data Open Sauce collects (spoiler: nothing), how it works, and what happens when you use the Support Potato College donation feature powered by PayBlis.

TL;DR — Open Sauce collects zero data. Everything runs locally in your browser. No tracking. No telemetry. No analytics. No accounts. No cloud. The only network request the extension ever makes is to process a donation — and only when you explicitly click the Donate button.

1. Executive Summary

Open Sauce is built with one core principle: your browser is yours. The extension does not collect, transmit, sell, share, or store any personal data, browsing history, account information, or any other information whatsoever. Every feature — the website scanner, the invention generator, blueprint annotations, chaos effects, easter eggs, and the achievement system — runs entirely on your device.

The only time Open Sauce makes a network request is when you explicitly click the "Donate via PayBlis" button in the Support Potato College tab. Even then, the only data sent is the donation amount and currency — no personal information, no browsing data, no identifiers.

2. What Data We Collect

Nothing. Open Sauce does not collect any data from you or your device. Specifically:

No personal information — we don't ask for your name, email, address, phone number, or any identifier
No browsing history — we don't track which websites you visit, what you search for, or what you click
No page content — the website scanner counts visible elements (images, buttons, etc.) but this count is processed locally and never transmitted
No authentication data — there are no accounts, no logins, no tokens
No device information — we don't collect IP addresses, browser fingerprints, OS versions, or hardware info
No usage analytics — we don't track how often you use the extension, which features you use, or how long you use them

3. How Open Sauce Works (Local Processing)

All extension functionality runs entirely on your device, inside your browser:

Website Scanner

When you click the Scan button, Open Sauce counts the visible images, buttons, videos, links, forms, and cards on the current page. This count is performed locally using the browser's DOM API. The fake engineering metrics (Structural Integrity, Duct Tape Required, Explosion Probability, Likelihood William Osman Builds This) are generated locally using random number generation and never leave your device.

Invention Generator

Random inventions (like "Hydraulic Bluetooth Banana") are generated locally from a built-in word bank. No network request is made.

Blueprint Mode

Engineering annotations ("LOAD BEARING", "NEEDS BEARINGS", "ADD MORE MOTORS") are injected as overlay elements on the current page. These overlays are added to the page's DOM locally and removed when you toggle Blueprint Mode off. The page's original content is never modified.

Browser Chaos

The 12 chaos effects (button jiggle, googly eyes, magnet cursor, window wobble, scroll inertia, link sparkle, screen shake, drunk rotation, image meltdown, debris particles, glitch text, cursor trail) are all CSS and JavaScript overlays applied locally. Every effect stores a cleanup function that fully restores the page when chaos is turned off. Nothing is destructive — the page is always restored to its original state.

Engineering Mode Effects

Each of the 8 engineering modes (civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical, aerospace, software, biomedical, explosive) applies a distinct visual overlay to the page — concrete cracks, lightning bolts, gears, bubbles, starfields, matrix rain, ECG lines, and explosions. All effects are overlay elements that are removed when you switch modes or hit STOP ALL.

Easter Eggs

Hidden surprises (William Approved stamp, rubber duck, mini robot, tiny explosion, fake firmware update) are triggered locally. The Konami code (↑↑↓↓←→←→ B A) is detected locally.

Screenshot Mode

When you click the Screenshot button, Open Sauce renders a branded PNG image locally using the HTML Canvas API. The image is generated on your device and downloaded directly to your computer. No image data is transmitted.

4. Chrome Permissions Explained

Open Sauce requests only three minimal permissions, all required for core functionality:

No host permissions are requested. Open Sauce does not request access to read or modify data on any specific website. The content script runs on all URLs (<all_urls>) but only to inject the floating SAUCE button — it does not read, transmit, or store page content.

5. Donations & PayBlis

Open Sauce includes a Support Potato College tab where users can optionally make a donation. Donations are processed securely through PayBlis (https://pay.payblis.com), a payment processing service.

What happens when you click "Donate"

The extension sends a request to our donation proxy backend (hosted on Render) with only two pieces of data: the donation amount (e.g. 5) and the currency (e.g. USD)
The proxy backend adds your PayBlis merchant key and creates a checkout URL
The checkout URL opens in a new browser tab
You complete the payment on PayBlis's secure checkout page

Important: The only data the extension sends is the donation amount and currency. No personal information, no browsing data, no user identifiers, no page content is ever sent to our backend or to PayBlis. The donation proxy does not log or store any user data. PayBlis's own privacy policy applies to the checkout and payment process.

PayBlis Privacy

When you complete a donation, PayBlis processes your payment information (credit card, billing details, etc.) according to their own privacy policy. Open Sauce never sees, stores, or transmits your payment information — that all happens on PayBlis's secure infrastructure. We encourage you to review PayBlis's privacy policy at https://pay.payblis.com before making a donation.

6. Local Storage

Open Sauce stores the following data in chrome.storage.local on your device:

All of this data lives only on your device. You can reset it at any time by clicking the "Reset all progress" button in the popup, or by removing the extension from Chrome.

7. Third-Party Services

Open Sauce interacts with exactly one third-party service:

PayBlis (pay.payblis.com) — processes donations when you explicitly click the Donate button. PayBlis's privacy policy applies to the checkout process. We do not share any data with PayBlis beyond the donation amount.

Open Sauce does not use any of the following:

❌ Mixpanel, Amplitude, or any product analytics
❌ Sentry, Bugsnag, or any error reporting
❌ Stripe, PayPal, or any payment SDK (PayBlis handles payments externally)
❌ Advertising networks
❌ Social media embeds
❌ CDN-hosted scripts (all code is bundled in the extension)

8. Children's Privacy

Open Sauce does not knowingly collect any data from anyone, including children under 13. Since no data is collected at all, no special protections for children's data are needed. The extension is suitable for users of all ages who enjoy engineering-themed humor in the spirit of William Osman, Hacksmith, and Michael Reeves.

9. Changes to This Policy

We will update this privacy policy if the extension's functionality changes in a way that affects data handling. Since no data is currently collected and no accounts exist, no notification will be given for policy updates — but the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent revision.

If we ever add a feature that collects data (which we have no plans to do), we will:
